Greco’s Project – the best gyros in Athens
We don’t know if it will be the best in Athens but it was the best meal of our whole trip to Greece and it deserved the first place in this list of places to eat in Athens. It was at Greco’s Project, located in the lively Monastiraki Square (one of the places where we recommend you to stay in Athens), they served us very quickly and we were surprised by the automatic machine they have to cut the gyros.
The gyros is very similar (if not the same) to the kebab we know here, which is cooked in a vertical oven. But watch out! Despite being similar, we were very surprised by its taste!
You can find them wrapped in pita bread or, as in this case, served on a plate. We tried the pork and chicken gyros (about 10 euros each) and we couldn’t tell which one was better. The portions are also very generous!
We also tried the ntakakia, a kind of Italian bruschetta that is very good too!
Erato Restaurant Plaka – best moussaka in Athens
It’s a very good option to taste the mousaka and other typical Greek dishes, we tried the mousaka and the souvlaki (meat skewers), all very good!
The moussaka is a kind of Greek lasagna, but to make the layers instead of paste they use aubergine, it’s very good!
MS Roof garden – best views of Athens
If we were to take a view of Athens, it would probably be from this terrace, with Monastiraki Square and the Acropolis in the background. The MS Roof garden was a real discovery, we had a coffee but you can also go for lunch or dinner.
Novagea – best Greek yogurt in Athens
Very close to the entrance to the Acropolis is this cool place to try Greek yogurt. You can add fruit or toppings to it, it was great!
You can also make a juice from the fruit of your choice and have it prepared on the spot.
Lukumades – best Greek dessert in Athens
If you want to taste the lokumades, one of the most famous typical Greek desserts and prepared in all its forms, don’t miss this place. Lokumades are a kind of very good Greek doughnuts.
All That Jatz – Athens on the cheap
Another typical place to eat in Athens is the All That Jatz restaurant. It is very close to the Monastiraki square and the Ermou shopping street.
Cinque Wine & Deli Bar – Best Wine bar in Athens
Cinque Wine & Deli Bar is one of the best rated restaurants in Athens, it is located in the heart of the Psiri neighborhood and has a local wine list that will delight more than one person! Besides wine, it offers tapas with local products, sausages, cheeses…
The only problem is that the restaurant is quite small, so we recommend you to book through their website.
Also you can’t miss the octopus in all its forms, grilled, stewed, in sauce…
